Seeing the Real Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic boasts 900 miles of tropical coasts, stunning mountains and scenic deserts, making this island nation a popular tourist destination. The country also has a complex history showcased in its rich artistic and literary traditions, including merengue music and dance.

Even with an active tourist industry, much of the country suffers from severe poverty. Dominicans of Haitian descent are particularly vulnerable, as they are often excluded from social and economic exchange. About 20 percent of Dominican families living below the poverty line cannot access social assistance programs because they do not have the necessary documentation such as birth certificates and identity papers. Compounding the hardships of poverty, natural disasters are a recurring threat to homes and infrastructure and especially devastating to people living in rural areas.

Journey with Opportunity Dominican Republic to witness firsthand how we are walking alongside Dominican families in the poorest sectors of society to help them achieve their dreams. Through the provision of loans, technical assistance and financial education, our clients are developing sustainable businesses and creating holistic change in their lives.
