YAO Goes to Boot Camp

On Saturday, May 15, 33 young professionals gathered in Minneapolis, Minn. for the first-ever YAO Boot Camp. The group spent the afternoon learning how to turn their knowledge of microfinance into action through a series of discussions and presentations.

YAO-Minneapolis member Riley Powell gave a lively, interactive presentation on the ABC’s of microfinance and the work of Opportunity International. YAO chair Liesel Pritzker led a Q-&-A with Arusha branch manager David Makanza of Opportunity Tanzania. And AJ Renold dropped in via Skype® for a conversation about his work on the ground with Opportunity Tanzania loan clients.

YAO member Lindsay Bolles and her parents Glenn and Carole generously hosted the Boot Camp at Interlachen Country Club, and then invited everyone back to their home later that night to continue the conversation at a dinner reception.

Participants in the Boot Camp left with lots of helpful suggestions on how they can get engaged in the global microfinance movement. Here are a few ideas:

• Join YAO on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, and invite 10 of your friends to do the same
• Host a fundraiser on OptINnow for a birthday or other special occasion to extend your reach and your impact
• Be inspired by seeing the work of Opportunity International in action. Travel with YAO on the Insight Trip to Tanzania, Sept. 4-11
• Attend Opportunity’s Fall Microfinance Conference, Oct 8-9, in Washington, D.C.
