A mother’s inspiring story from Uganda…

We celebrate Maria as we celebrate all mothers this Mother's Day. Here, artist Dawn Feller has honored Maria with a beautiful rendering of her with her two children (left), alongside a photo of Maria in front of the school she established in Uganda (right).

When Nassaka Maria Kasujja noticed that there was a need for educational facilities in her community of Kampala, Uganda, the widowed mother of two decided to take action.

Maria took out her first loan of $101 from Opportunity International to establish a local primary school. Four loans later, the school provides an education to 500 students. But Maria hasn’t stopped there. She also runs a catering business for local events and a poultry farm raising 400 chicks. As a result of her hard work and increased income, Maria has been able to build a house for her children, Bonny Mutanyi, who is 15, and Awanyoka Brorin, who is eight. Most importantly, she is able to send her children to school. Through her work, Maria is ensuring brighter futures for her children and the children in her community.

Maria’s hard work and success is an inspiration to mothers everywhere who struggle to provide for their families and to lift themselves out of poverty.
