Microfinance Loans to Give the Poor a Working Chance - Opportunity Blog

Stand Up For Africa’s Farmers

When times are tough, it’s important to stay focused on what matters to you. At Opportunity, we remain focused on delivering microfinance services that make a real impact on our clients living in very difficult economic situations.

In particular, our agricultural finance programs in Africa enable smallholder farmers to pay their bills throughout the growing season, helping them avoid short-selling crops for less than their value just to make ends meet until the harvest.

Ways you can help:

  • Make a donation and designate it to our Banking on Africa campaign.
Less than 10% of all sub-Saharan Africans have access to formal banking services. The Banking on Africa campaign is mobilizing $384 million to build banks for Africans living in poverty, including 90,000 smallholder farmers.

  • Let your voice be heard.
In the next few weeks, the U.S. Congress will review cutting the budget for the next fiscal year. There’s a danger that U.S. financial support of innovative agricultural programs in Africa will be reduced or even eliminated. Sign the ONE Campaign’s powerful petition to Congress to voice your support for African agricultural programs.

Take action and show your support for all Africans living in poverty, especially the underserved smallholder farmer. Advocate for African clients who want the opportunity to access banking services and improve the lives of themselves, their families, and their communities.

I signed the petition. Wouldn't it be great if we could get everybody here to sign it?

  • Eriemer

I signed it too. It's quick and easy, and it's important to let your Congresspeople know the issues that matter to you.

I just signed the petition – took all of about 15 seconds. We ALL have 15 seconds to spare in order to make our voices heard on behalf of all the working farmers in Africa. Do not let Congress cut this from the budgets. These hard working farmers deserve an opportunity to the same advantages that we have such as microfinance products and especially agriculture programs.

The agricultural finance programs are some of the most exciting value-added components of Opportunity's microfinance work. Along with savings and insurance products, I can't wait to see what's next!
