Live: Dale Hanson Bourke Inspires Board of Governors #BOG09

SECOND CALLINGI am always surprised by Opportunity supporters. It is not that I do not expect them to be exceptional, or that I do not see them as leaders. It is the fact that they are such impressive people, and they simultaneously care so deeply for the poor.

Dale Hanson Bourke is an amazing woman. She is the president of the CIDRZ Foundation, which supports AIDS research and treatment programs in Africa. She is also the founder of the AIDS Orphan Bracelet Project and author of The Skeptic’s Guide to the Global AIDS Crisis, The Skeptic’s Guide to Global Poverty and Second Calling–Finding Passion and Purpose for the Rest of Your Life.

Dale shared with her fellow governors, “A few years ago, I met a woman named Rabina, who was working in Uganda. She was telling me about the situation in her country and the problems they have with AIDS.”

Dale was paralyzed–she did not know how to respond to Rabina’s situation. Rabina’s country was fighting a pandemic of global proportions, and Dale was doing nothing to help.

She has since discovered a response.

On Insight Trips to Africa with like-minded Opportunity International supporters, Dale often hears the question, “What can I do?”

Her answer is always, “I will say to them I have something for you to do. You must go and you must listen. And you must ask the women to tell you their story. The compelling thing is that poor women very seldom have the opportunity to tell their story. It’s a blessing to them, and it is an incredible blessing to us.”

“That is a very sacred trust we have been given,” she finishes.

I encourage you to embrace this sacred trust as your own life mission.
