Through Opportunity International’s partnership with One Hen, you can volunteer to teach children about the power of microfinance to transform lives.
Opportunity is working with One Hen to create educational events that bring the lessons of microfinance to life in the classroom. Based on the children’s book One Hen: How One Small Loan Made a Big Difference, the curriculum helps students to understand how business works. Volunteers lead interactive games and share simple stories of entrepreneurs who started with a good idea, a small loan and the determination to work their way out of poverty.
The program illustrates the difference people can make in their own lives by taking personal initiative, and the difference they can make in others’ by giving back. The One Hen tale is inspired by the life of Dr. Kwabena Darko, who received his first microfinance loan in the late 1960s and is now one of the largest chicken farmers in West Africa. Darko was instrumental in building Opportunity International’s organization in Ghana and has served as chairman of its board of directors.
The volunteer program is championed by the Women’s Opportunity Network (WON) and seeks to connect Opportunity supporters with young children to inspire the next generation of global citizens and philanthropists.
